New Airspace Approval Process
Since writing my last article concerning applying for an airspace waiver or authorization, the FAA has released a streamlined method for requesting waivers and authorizations for Commercial Drone Pilots. No, this post isn’t about LAANC but rather the new FAA website known as Drone Zone. Until LAANC is fully implemented, we now have access to a user friendly and well-designed website for which to work with here: https://faadronezone.faa.gov
Once you’ve created an account or logged in, click "Part 107 Dashboard" as shown in this screenshot:
In the next screen you want to click the blue button that says Create Part 107 waiver/authorization. The beautiful part of this section is you now have quick and easy access to the rules and references you need to apply.
Now here is where you select which item you want to apply for. If you're not entirely sure which one you need, you can use this FAA web page as reference.
Once you start your application, the information needed is the same as before. It's just much easier to understand now. The most important part of the application process is to be thorough and accurate.
